Bo Song

Bo Song, a well-known tenor and vocal educator, is a professor of the Department of Voice & Opera at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music (abbr. as SHCM), a doctoral supervisor, and a member of national-level teaching group. He appeared as jury at the China National Vocal Competition (Exhibition), The Chinese Golden Bell Award for Music, the National Opera, Dance Drama & Musical Theatre Fine Works Exhibition, the China International Vocal Competition (Ningbo), the Chinese Peafowl Award for National Art Institutes of Higher Learning Vocal Competition and other important events. He has been invited as an expert in the evaluation of the level of undergraduate teaching achievement by China’s Ministry of Education. Also, he’s a visiting professor at Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Harbin Conservatory of Music, and other higher art institutions. 


Bo Song received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Shenyang Conservatory of music, and furthered his study at the Central Conservatory of Music; also received an opera Certificate from Boston University and an Advanced Certificate from the Juilliard School. As winner of the Elizabeth Rethberg Award in the Rosa Ponsell International Vocal Competition in 1988, Mr. Song won first place in the China National Council Competition in 1987, and in the New England Regional Metropolitan Opera Council Audition in 1992. In recent years, he has received many awards including the Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement of the Ministry of Education (collective), the First Prize of the Shanghai Teaching Achievement (collective), the 2012 Shanghai Yucai(talent cultivation) Award and the He Luting Foundation Award of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Bo Song was reviewed by The Boston Globe as “an outstanding performer”. He has cooperated with opera houses including the New York City Opera and Opera Theatre of St. Louis in performing more than a dozen operas such as “Rigoletto”, “La Bohème”, “La Traviata” and “Così Fan Tutte”; cooperated with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Orchestra, China National Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and Macao Orchestra in performance of works such as Verdi’s “Requiem”, Mahler’s “Das Lied von der Erde”, Mozart’s “Requiem” and numerous concerts at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Macao Cultural Centre. He also participated in the “Bravo, China!” a performance at the Hollywood Bowl with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra that was telecast across China, the “Five-Star Red Flag Fluttering in the Wind” cultural gala held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and the outdoor Shanghai World Expo Celebration Gala which was broadcasted nationally.
In 2002, he was invited by the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) to attend and perform at the Lantern Festival Celebration held at the Great Hall of the People, where China’s Party and State leaders celebrated the Lantern Festival with representatives from all walks of life in the capital. Mr. Song participated in CCTV’s 2010 New Year’s Eve Gala which was broadcasted live worldwide and galas held by China’s major satellite channels such as Dragon TV of Shanghai. His “Returned Starlight” and “Bo Song’s Recital” DVDs were both published and released by Shanghai Audio & Video Publishing House (China), and Bo Song’s Recital repertoire was broadcasted on CCTV-15 Music Channel. Also, he has participated in the filming of the MTV “In the Splendid Sunlight”, which was initiated by the Information Office of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee.
Bo Song has given lectures at Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Zhejiang Conservatory of Music, Tianjin Conservatory of Music, Harbin Conservatory of Music, and Xinghai Conservatory of Music for many times, and was interviewed by CCTV Variety “Life of Music” for an episode titled “Bo Song, the Vocal Educator”.
