Weijie Zhang is the associate principal clarinet player at the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra. Born in Taiwan, China, Zhang has a degree in music from the National Taiwan University of Arts and was admitted to the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in 2011, where he studied under Joachim Klemm and earned his Master’s degree with top grades in 2013. In the same year, he was accepted as a PhD candidate with the highest grades in the winds instrument cohort. He went on to earn a PhD degree and Germany’s most prestigious artist diploma. In university, he worked as a teaching assistant.
During his time in Germany, Zhang performed with numerous orchestras, including the Dresden Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Dresden, the Royal Chamber Orchestra Dresden,and many other “A grade” German orchestras. He also worked with French composer Tristan Murail, touring Germany, Switzerland, and France, playing Murail’s newest compositions.
After earning his PhD degree, Zhang was invited to attend many music festivals, including the Oberstdorf Summer of Music, the International Aeolus Competition for Wind Instruments、Holzbläser festival Münster, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau International Music Festival in Shenzhen, and the Chiayi City International Band Festival in Taiwan. He joined the Ningbo Symphony Orchestra in 2018.
